Sunday Crew
Long time no write! It’s hard to believe that my last SoulJoy blog was over a year ago, and I definitely didn't mean for it to be this long before I wrote again. But, life got busy… and that’s actually the reason that the “SoulJoy Sunday Crew” collection exists.
“Busy” is an interesting word in my life as I have a love/hate relationship with a filled calendar. I am the queen of a quick yes and have found a lot of worth in being the girl who is “always up to something”.
I have no dramatic story of stresses getting too high or any moment that intercepted my abilities to work five jobs at once. Better yet, I have a testimony of a consistent whisper telling me: Simple is better. Quiet is more productive.
I am by no means an expert on simplicity, and feel like an imposter even trying to write this down. I am in a season of learning how apply a couple things to my life and, however amateur I may be, I still want to make a list of things God has taught me recently about rest, simplicity, and delight:
Every day should have a little bit of Sunday in it:
Culturally, Sunday is the “rest day”, but every day should have some sort of stillness for our souls to settle into. The Sunday Crew mindset is to delight in each day as if it were Sunday… It’s important to leave margin in your schedule to savor up the sweet stuff, keep it simple, and be present.
It is better to work from rest than to work to rest:
I’m sure you know the feeling of working so hard, hoping for that relaxing morning, day off, quality time with friends, etc. just for another bullet to end up on the to-do list. There is an endless cycle of tasks to be done at all times. So, what if the emphasis of rest was not a reward for hard work, but instead, the foundation your week builds upon? Work from rest, not for it!!
There is a difference between resting vs. resting with God:
All resting is great. Close your eyes, watch a movie, take a walk and plan an adventure. But please be aware that there is a soul-deep level of resting with God that you will not experience if you do not include Christ. It’s beautiful that the Creator of our souls wants to give us the gift of rest, and tapping into the Spirit is the only way you will experience rest and peace as God intended. Here’s a couple practical ways I incorporate my faith in my days off:
Study out rest and sabbath from the Word (click here for a link that shares more scriptures)
Do 2 things with God before you start your day (examples: take a prayer walk, read your Bible, listen to a sermon, journal, etc.)
Make a gratitude list to God throughout the day (10 extraordinary joys!!!)
Actively refrain from anything work-related, even talking about it!
I’m currently learning to practice Sabbath-ing once a week and use the following list to plan my day ahead of time. I’ve also found it beneficial to delete social media, play only worship music, and trying to not spend $. All are just ideas, but I hope this blog shares the heart behind the Sunday Crew and maybe even challenges you to try resting in a new, God honoring way!!
